Boy, oh boy is the playoff committee going to catch some flak. The NCAA in their wonderful foresight (he writes sarcastically) made the playoffs a four team event. This year there are six teams for four spots. I figure Oregon, Alabama and Florida State are definitely in the final four. TCU, Baylor and Ohio State all have good cases for the fourth spot. TCU has one loss to Baylor by 3 points. Baylor has one loss losing to 7-5 West Virginia by 14 points. Ohio State is a one loss team losing to 6-6 Virginia Tech by 14 points. The argument will be that Baylor defeated TCU in their head to head meeting. However, TCU was on the road at Baylor. Ohio State's argument is that they have improved since their loss. They routed Wisconsin last night 59-0 in the Big Ten championship game. But, the Big Ten wasn't very good this year. Wisconsin also lost to LSU and Northwestern. Baylor had the closest game yesterday beating Kansas State 38-27. Earlier in the day TCU beat Iowa State 55-3 and it could have been worse. Earlier in the season TCU defeated K State 41-20.
I would like to be in the room as the committee discusses the rankings. They might also discuss recommending an eight team playoff for next year. I think it would be easier to fill eight spots rather than four. This year besides the six I've mentioned you could add Michigan State and Arizona to the mix or two others. But at least all the one loss teams would be in the playoffs. This year two of them won't make it.
I like the way Gary Patterson coaches. His players know what they are supposed to do. He gets the most out of his players. He recruits athletes and places them where they are needed. I'm sure if he had to do it all over Coach Patterson would change his mind about going for a first down in the last minute of the Baylor game. If he would have punted the game probably would have gone into overtime. Baylor won the game on a field goal.
By picking teams I wanted to win instead of those I thought would win I was 5-5. Georgia Tech gave Florida State a good ball game and Louisiana Tech lead Marshall for most of the game before losing. I really overrated Wisconsin. Four pro games to go today.
