One of my friends in the Hill Country Fly Fishers club is a really good fisherman. (Probably the best in the club in my opinion) He has added a camera to his fishing and it gives us a chance to be there with him as he reels in the fish.  I'm going to post these on the clubs' website page  http://www.hcff.org/  but I thought I'd put them here also.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBS7LorWgiM&feature=youtu.be

This story ties into the youtu.be video, so turn up your volume and click on the high definition “gear” in the lower right-hand corner of your screen.

Opening day of the trout lease at Tecaboca provided a mixed bag.

The trout came to play, as well as a nice Channel Cat and Guadalupe Bass.

Camp Tecaboca is immediately downstream of the State Fish Hatchery where the Guadalupe Bass have been raised.

I had just released a trout and was preparing to make my next cast. I was about waist deep in the clear waters of Johnson Creek when I happened to look down into the water. A very nice Guadaupe Bass,  maybe 15 or 16 inches, was swimming along the bottom right toward me (the first “I’ll bet darn” in the video). It kept coming and settled right between my feet (the second “I’ll bet darn” in the video). I had been standing still for a while, so it probably thought my feet were two tree stumps and a safe place to rest. Who knows?

I still had my two-fly rig in my left hand, so I just dropped it gently and let it flutter to the bottom toward my feet. The rig landed right in front of the Guad, and I watched its gills flare and suck it the lead fly. The fish exploded out of the water and made a few leaps. I probably did not get a good hook set because the fish threw the hook during a leap, but I caught the whole thing on my action camera, which was strapped to my chest and leaving both of my hands free.

I am glad to have video. I could not make up stuff like this. It is a once-in-a-lifetime feat.

I hope you enjoyed the videos.  Makes me want to get off my rear end and go fishing.
